Game Benchmarks

We are going to look at gaming performance now using built-in game benchmarks in three different modern games.  To get a full perspective on performance we are going to run a benchmark at 1080p with “Low” in-game settings, then we are also going to run a benchmark with “Ultra” (or max settings) at 1440p.  The video card we are using on all testing is an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Founders Edition with latest drivers.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint

There is definitely a difference in performance between the Ryzen 3 3100 CPU, Intel Core i3-9100F CPU and the two other CPUs, the Ryzen 3 3300X and i5-9400.  WE are talking 20-30FPS differences.  Ultimately the Ryzen 3 3300X is slightly faster than the i5-9400, but they are close.  The Ryzen 3 3100 is faster than the i3-9100F.

Now we are running the game at 1440p with the “Ultimate” graphics settings in the game.  This certainly evens things out.  The Ryzen 3 3300X and Intel i5-9400 are exactly on par on performance.  However, both of those CPUs are pulling higher numbers than the Ryzen 3 3100 and especially the i3-9100F which hangs back about 5 FPS.

Red Dead Redemption 2

In Red Dead Redemption 2 the Ryzen 3 3300X is really helping even at low settings, it’s 17% faster than the i5-9400 which is incredible.

When we increase the settings in the game as high as possible at 1440p performance evens up.  Interestingly the two Intel CPUs are slightly faster on framerate, by 2 FPS, not sure why, but there it is in this game.

Metro Exodus

Finally, we have Metro Exodus, which is generally a very GPU driven game. At 1080p at “low” settings though the Ryzen 3 3300X does come out on top in performance.

At 1440p we have turned the game up to the highest “Extreme” quality setting.  Once again, we see the two Intel CPUs provide us just a couple of framerates faster in this game, not sure why, but just like the last one there it is.  They are still overall close though, and increasing the game settings has made the game much more GPU dependent than it was.  The Ryzen 3 3300X does compete well but we may be seeing a slight CPU bottleneck even at these settings and resolution.  We would need to do a much more thorough game testing to know for sure.
