Rendering Performance

We will now take a look at how rendering performance compares.

Cinebench R23

Cinebench R23 Multi-Core Performance Graph

Cinebench also shows the difference in core/thread count, but it’s pretty spectacular how well the 8600G is keeping up with the 5700G even though it has fewer cores/threads, it really has a big architecture improvement. The 8700G is 26% faster than the 5700G and 29% difference between the 8700G and 8600G.

Cinebench R23 Single-Core Performance Graph

In single-core performance, the 8700G is 19% faster than the 5700G and the 8600G is 16% faster. The difference between the 8700G and 8600G is 3% in single-core performance.

Blender Open Data Benchmark

Blender Benchmark monster performance graph

For the Blender Benchmark testing, we are using the CPU for rendering, so core/thread count does make a big difference as well here. The 8700G is 26% faster than the 5700G and the difference between the 8700G and 8600G is 33%.

Blender Benchmark junkshop performance graph

In junkshop the 8700G is 24% faster than the 5700G and the difference between the 8700G and 8600G is 30%.

Blender Benchmark classroom performance graph

In classroom the 8700G is 25% faster than the 5700G and the difference between the 8700G and 8600G is 33%.

V-RAY Benchmark

V-Ray Benchmark CPU performance graph

In V-Ray using the CPU, the 8700G is 41% faster than the 5700G and the 8600G is 11% faster. The difference between the 8700G and 8600G is 27%.

V-Ray Benchmark GPU performance graph

We also ran the GPU test in V-Ray and found that the 8700G is 26% faster than the 5700G and 31% faster than the 8600G.

HandBrake

We are going to test HandBrake performance encoding a 10-minute video using H.264 on the CPU and then the GPU. Remember, we are looking for the lowest time to encode here, the lowest result is the best one.

HandBrake CPU performance graph

In this graph, we are running the transcoding on the CPU, and we definitely find the 8700G has a big advantage over the 5700G at about 22% faster. Even the 8600G, with fewer cores, is slightly faster than the 5700G, which is impressive.

HandBrake GPU performance graph

We also ran this test on the integrated graphics with AMD VCE, and we see a dramatic decrease in time compared to CPU only. The 8700G and 8600G are similar in performance with the integrated graphics transcoding performance, which is a massive 44% performance improvement compared to the 5700G.

SUMMARY

We reviewed the AMD Ryzen 7 8700G and AMD Ryzen 5 8600G and found that they provide a substantial upgrade in performance over the previous generation, with the latest features and current AMD technologies end-to-end. AMD has provided a big performance uplift within the same power envelope as the previous generation, making these new APUs very efficient in what they deliver. Pricing is slightly high for the 8700G, considering a reduction in PCI-Express lanes, but otherwise if you don't need discrete graphics, these APUs provide a complete desktop PC solution.
