Gameplay Performance at 1440p with Ray Tracing

In this section, we use the same comparison setup, while enabling Ray Tracing features in each game. We also enable FSR or DLSS, again depending on the game and video card(s) used. As we enable Ray Tracing the game demands increase, usually dramatically.

Alan Wake 2

Now we start to see the demand increase. Although Alan Wake moves fairly slow, even the low 40sFPS is not sufficient. None of the cards is successful without upscaling. Even with upscaling, the XFX Speedster MERC 319 Radeon RX 7800 XT Black Edition is way out of the lineup. The ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 GRE OC Edition leads by 7% and 50%. Interestingly, the Radeon card is quicker than the GeForce card in Ray Tracing in this game. The Rabbit has some magic up its sleeve. Overclocking shows minimal advantage here.

Returnal

All three cards are playable with Ray Tracing enabled here. The MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Gaming X TRIO is just 1FPS quicker. All upscale over 100FPS. Overclocking gains 9%.

Forspoken

Again we see all the cards are playable natively with good solid FPS. This is nearly a dead heat. The ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 GRE OC Edition has a 2% and 3% advantage here, upscaling is just slightly better. Overclocking is just 2% better.

Chernobylite Enhanced Edition

ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 GRE OC Edition: performance 1440p Ray Tracing: ChernobyliteEE

This game can be brutal with Ray Tracing enabled at “Ultra”. Here none of the games is remotely playable, with upscaling though all the cards can show playable FPS. The MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Gaming X TRIO shows its prowess by 20%, however, the ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 GRE OC Edition is 7.5% quicker than the XFX Speedster MERC 319 Radeon RX 7800 XT Black Edition. The edge expands slightly in upscaling. Overclocking adds 7%.

Dying Light 2

Another demanding game. Only the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Gaming X TRIO can make the cut without upscaling, barely. The ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 GRE OC Edition trails behind by 18% and just edges out the XFX Speedster MERC 319 Radeon RX 7800 XT Black Edition by 4% with a draw at upscaling. We do see an 8% increase with overclocking, but even then it can’t do much natively.

Cyberpunk 2077

ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 GRE OC Edition: performance 1440p Ray Tracing: Cyberpunk 2077

Another rough go. Nothing good without upscaling, even then two of the cards are short. The MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Gaming X TRIO is 21% to the better here. The ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 GRE OC Edition just edges out the XFX Speedster MERC 319 Radeon RX 7800 XT Black Edition by 9%. There is a similar result seen in upscaling as well. Overclocking will gain playable status for the ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 GRE OC Edition as it gains 9%. Just enough to push it over the finish line. A tough day in Night City.

SUMMARY

This video card review examines the ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 GRE OC Edition. Gaming performance at 1440p is quite good in plain raster settings and also quite good in Ray Tracing utilizing upscaling. This may be a 4K card once FSR3 becomes widely available. The fit, finish and cooling of this video card is where it shines. Overclocking is a bit challenging, but the card performs well once set up correctly. The price is a bit high but the premium build of the card is obvious.
