Windows Auto Super Resolution, Auto SR for short, is currently limited to Copilot+ PCs which use Qualcomm’s new flagship processor. Windows Auto Super Resolution was first spotted by Windows 11 users back in February who discovered the Auto SR on/off toggles nestled in the display>graphics settings of an Insider update. Auto SR continues the current industry-wide trend of hardware manufacturers each providing their own type of upscaling technology. While AMD’s FSR and Intel’s XeSS do not require proprietary hardware to be used, Microsoft is, at least for now, following a similar path as NVIDIA with its DLSS technology, which requires specific silicon with AI features to operate.
Per Microsoft:
“Auto super resolution (Auto SR) seamlessly integrates with Windows to automatically enhance the frame rates of existing games in real-time while also providing detailed visuals on screen, offering a balance that exceeds what your PC hardware can achieve on its own. At initial launch, this feature will be exclusive to Copilot+ PCs equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon® X Elite processor and a curated set of games that can be found at https://www.worksonwoa.com/ a third-party open-source site that Microsoft has contributed compatibility data to.”
Microsoft has created a supported games page that breaks down Auto SR support into four categories which are: “yes, out-of-box”, “yes, opt-in”, “no”, and “unknown”. There is also a compatibility tab that breaks down into four categories: “Perfect”, “Playable”, “Runs”, and “Unplayable”. Remedy Entertainment’s Control is, of course, included in the out-of-box list of supported games. Control has essentially become the poster child for upscaling technology by continuously adopting each new version or being compatible with them. The current list of supported games is rather small but could grow quite quickly following testing by developers who may issue updates to support Auto SR. The list of games with unknown support currently sits at over 1,400 but many of those are also listed with perfect compatibility.
