Stock Clock Testing

For our stock clock testing, we have configured our CPU to run at factory settings for speed, and voltage. This yields an approximate power at the wall of 185w under load (a 127w differential from idle, which pulls about 58w). This results in the CPU running at 3.7GHz on all cores during the looping rounds of Cinebench R20.

Max Fan

We started our testing today by turning the fans up all the way to 11 and setting the course for our stock configuration. This brought the Assassin 4S to 50.25 degrees Celsius which surpassed the MasterAir MA824’s 52 degrees and the IceSLEET G6 Stealth’s 53.25 degrees but trailed the CORSAIR A115’s 49.5 degree result.

Note that the max fan speed on the Assassin 4S reached 1850 RPM while the CORSAIR A115 topped out at 1600 RPM, the MasterAir 824 topped out at 1900/1550 RPM and the IceSLEET G6 Stealth topped out at 1450 RPM.

1500 RPM Fan

Dropping the fans to 1,500 RPM leveled out the playing field with the Assassin 4S turning in a 52-degree Celisus result that was ahead of the MasterAir MA824’s 52.75 and IceSLEET G6 Stealth’s 53.25 degrees Celsius. The Corsair A115 retained the lead at 49.75 degrees.

1000 RPM Fan

Lowering the fan’s RPM further to 1,000 RPM sees the two fan examples in this test start to pull away from the single fan examples. The Assassin 4S took a step down the rankings at 56.38 degrees Celsius which only knifed the IceSLEET G6 Stealth’s 57.5 degree result. The CORSAIR A115 and MasterAir MA824 took the lead at 52.25 and 55.25 degrees Celsius respectively.

600 RPM Fan

Finally, down at 600 RPM, the Assassin 4S royally lost its cool at 69.38 degrees Celsius with the CORSAIR A115, MasterAir MA824 Stealth, and IceSLEET G6 Stealth ringing in temperatures of 57.5, 61.5, and 67.25 degrees respectively. What this shows us is that the sweet spot for performance on the Assassin 4S is not down in the low RPM fan range. Let’s move on now to look at some overclocking results with our coolers.

OC Testing

For our OC testing, we have configured our CPU to run 4100MHz on all cores and set the voltage to 1.3875V. This yields an approximate power at the wall of 255w under load (a 197w differential from idle, which pulls about 58w). This results in the CPU running at 4.1GHz on all cores during the looping rounds of Cinebench R20.

Max Fans

Now it’s time to boost our platform to its overclocked settings and get the fans back to 11 or so. Starting off, the Assassin 4S’s 66.88 degrees Celsius result is very competitive with the CORSAIR A115 at 66.5 degrees Celsius and the MasterAir 824 at 67 degrees Celsius. Bring up the rear is the IceSLEET G6 Stealth at 71 degrees.

1500 RPM Fans

At the 1500 RPM fan speed, the be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 leads all challengers at 78 degrees Celsius while the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO posted a value of 79.75 degrees Celsius. The DeepCool IceSLEET X7 Dual was right on the Hyper 212 EVO’s heels at 79.88 degrees Celsius. Then, strangely, we see the IceSLEET X5 at 82.88 degrees Celsius while the IceSLEET X6 was watching everyone from the rear at 83.25 degrees Celsius.

At the 1500 RPM fan speed, the single fan coolers dropped back a bit with the Assassin 4S chalking up a 69.88 degree Celsius result. The CORSAIR A115 maintained its lead at 66.63 degrees compared to the MasterAir MA824’s 67.75-degree result. The IceSLEET G6 Stealth remained at 71 degrees Celsius temperature as it was still running at maximum fan speeds. Now that we have seen how all of our units cool, let’s see if we can still hear!

SUMMARY

The DeepCool Assassin 4S is a single fan CPU cooler targeted at those looking for good performance while keeping the noise levels down. We tested it on our test bench and found that it was a solid thermal performer while being the quietest of the competition. The Assassin 4S is worth a hard look if you're wanting a very quiet cooler with reasonable thermal performance.
