The iPhone, Apple Watch, and MacBook Pro, three of Apple’s leading devices, have been gaining weight over the last few years, but their future iterations will mark a return to Apple’s philosophy of making devices as thin and light as possible, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, having revealed in a new edition of his Power On newsletter that skinnier and thinner versions of the hardware are currently in development. The new iPad Pro, which Apple unveiled in May with the new M4 chip, is already leading the charge with its 5.3-mm (11-inch model) and 5.1-mm (13-inch model) thin profiles.

Gurman writes:

  • “Apple has figured out how make its devices thinner again while still adding major new features. And I expect this approach to filter down to other devices over the next couple of years.”
  • “I’m told that Apple is now focused on developing a significantly skinnier phone in time for the iPhone 17 line in 2025.”
  • “It’s also working to make the MacBook Pro and Apple Watch thinner.”
  • “The plan is for the latest iPad Pro to be the beginning of a new class of Apple devices that should be the thinnest and lightest products in their categories across the whole tech industry.”

Apple on its thinnest product ever:

The new iPad Pro — the thinnest Apple product ever — features a stunningly thin and light design, taking portability to a whole new level. The 11-inch model is just 5.3 mm thin, and the 13-inch model is even thinner at a striking 5.1 mm, while both models are just as strong as the previous design. The 11-inch model weighs less than a pound, and the 13-inch model is nearly a quarter pound lighter than its predecessor — allowing pro users to extend their workflows in new ways and in more places. The new iPad Pro is available in two gorgeous finishes — silver and space black — both with 100 percent recycled aluminum enclosures.
