Conclusion
In our performance comparison review of the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER versus GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER, we reviewed gaming benchmarks in 2024, on modern hardware, in modern games, with the latest drivers. It was interesting to see how the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER performs in 2024 in modern games, and how well the Ray Tracing and DLSS performance holds up. We found that DLSS holds up pretty well, with similar performance gains, but Ray Tracing is majorly superior on the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER.
We tested DLSS upscaling, Ray Tracing, and 1440p resolution in modern games. The GeForce RTX 20 series was the first series of GPUs to support hardware Ray Tracing acceleration, so it was good to see how that holds up in 2024. It turns out, it just doesn’t, even at 1080p. The Ray Tracing performance is not usable in gaming today, even with DLSS it struggles. In addition, the 8GB of VRAM on the RTX 2080 SUPER is definitely showing its age for 1440p gaming in 2024.
The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER launched in January 2024 and replaced the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti at the same price point of $799. The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER provided a very decent upgrade over the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti by using a cut-down AD103 die rather than the AD104 die the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti utilized.
In addition, the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER upped the VRAM game by providing 16GB of VRAM compared to the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti at this price point in 2024. The 16GB of VRAM is a big deal when compared against the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER from 2019 with only 8GB. That VRAM difference actually made a big difference in the gameplay experience between these two video cards in today’s games.
Performance
The GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER struggles at gaming in 1440p in today’s games. However, the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER does not, it dominates gameplay performance over the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER and allows playable performance without needing upscaling at 1440p, even at Ultra game settings. Typically, we experienced the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER performing 130% faster than the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER at 1440p, with some lower ranges in the 90-100% range, but most were well over 100% on performance advantages.
DLSS did help the RTX 2080 SUPER, but of course, it helped the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER even more reach high framerates with better latency. The percentage advantage that DLSS helped performance was slightly higher on the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER compared to the RTX 2080 SUPER, but they were pretty close and nothing stood out too much.
When it comes to Ray Tracing though, the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER has a much larger leg up on performance over the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER. The GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER, even at just 1080p, could not provide playable gameplay with Ray Tracing in modern games. Even with DLSS, in many games it is iffy. However, with the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER every game was playable with maximum Ray Tracing at 1080p.
More importantly, the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is capable of playable Ray Tracing performance at 1440p in some games without DLSS, and in others with DLSS. The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER was around 150% faster in Ray Tracing and with Path Tracing above 200% faster. The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER also makes 4K gameplay viable, especially with DLSS, which is something the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER cannot do in 2024 in modern games.
Final Points
If you paid around $699 in 2019 for a GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER, then upgrading for a similar amount of money in 2024 would be the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER at $799 MSRP. In fact, if you run the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER through the CPI Inflation Calculator, that would be $854.23 in today’s dollars. At that price, the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER at $799 would actually be slightly less. It also shows how the pricing segments have moved upwards today.
If you were looking for an upgrade from a GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER, the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is going to provide a night and day difference in the gameplay experience in 2024. You are going to dominate 1440p gameplay, and 4K gameplay will be viable, and throw in DLSS and new features like DLSS 3 and DLSS 3.5 Ray Reconstruction and the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is a major upgrade.
We absolutely recommend skipping the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti and look for deals on the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER instead. The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER provides much better performance over the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti, but more importantly, the upgraded 16GB of VRAM makes a difference for smooth gameplay and faster performance in modern titles. If you are upgrading, and you want your card to last, the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is a better option.
It is also impressive to see the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER only utilizes 10% more power than the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER, but you gain 130%+ performance, and more with Ray Tracing. The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER also will run cooler, as they are all add-in-board partner cards, they have custom cooling and will run very cool. The fact that the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER doesn’t use much more power than the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER means you also won’t necessarily need to upgrade your PSU or power needs.
If you are looking for an upgrade in 2024, the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER is a strong option, and with 16GB of VRAM, it is more appealing.
