Kaspersky Lab, the Russian company best known for its anti-virus software, including its Premium Plan for home users that includes a VPN, data leak checker, and more, will begin shutting down its operations in the U.S. this weekend, on Saturday, July 20, according to new statements that a representative has shared. The news comes a month after the U.S. Bureau of Industry & Security announced that it would be banning Kaspersky’s software for use by U.S. Customers following an investigation stemming from national security concerns.

From a report:

  • “…beginning July 20 it will gradually wind down its U.S. operations and eliminate U.S.-based positions as a result of the new ban, despite initially vowing to fight the ban in court.”
  • “The company has carefully examined and evaluated the impact of the U.S. legal requirements and made this sad and difficult decision as business opportunities in the country are no longer viable, the company said in a statement.”
  • “Kaspersky did not say how many workers in the U.S. division were being let go except to say it affects less than 50 employees in the U.S.”
  • “Workers…are receiving severances but declined to discuss the nature of the severances.”

One of the company’s recent promos:

Kaspersky on being named Product of the Year:

We won the top award at AV-Comparatives, a leading European test lab, after outscoring 14 competitors across a series of rigorous tests. Our win comes from exceptional results in categories including malware detection, targeted attack prevention, and impact on system performance.
