“Rattlegate”: Noctua Acknowledges Potential Issue with Flagship NH-D15 G2 CPU Cooler for Intel and AMD Processors

The NH-D15 G2, a next-generation, dual-tower flagship CPU cooler that Noctua introduced on July 2 for Intel and AMD processors, including the modern AM5 and LGA 1700 platforms, may not perform as intended, according to a new statement that the company shared today in response to user reports about how the product is louder than its predecessor, the G1. Pricing for the new cooler, including its variants and NF-A14x25r G2 PWM fans, can be found directly below.

Noctua writes:

  • “We’re still in the process of conducting a thorough analysis, but our preliminary suspicion is that you have received a heatsink where the interlocking of the top fin has loosened a bit, probably in shipping.”
  • “In this case, the airflow of the fans can cause the fin to vibrate, which may result in slight rattling sounds. From our measurement, the acoustic impact of this is very small (<0.5dB(A)).”
  • “…we fully understand that this is frustrating and we’re working hard to provide a solution to customers who are affected by this as soon as possible.”
  • “As a temporary mitigation, we would recommend either putting a piece of tape to the side of the fins (where they interlock) or inserting a small piece of plastic or foam with ~1.8mm thickness between the top fin and second fin.”
  • “Both measures should prevent the top fin from moving and thereby eliminate the sounds you hear.”

The frequency analysis shows increased noise output at 500 and 630 Hz on the G2 compared to the G1 results, but the difference is not that high. In general, the difference in noise output is NOT high, as a raw number, but still, this noise will be highly annoying to some users because of the rattling sound.
