Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, the next-next installments of 20th Century Studios’ multi-billion-dollar film franchise that centers around blue aliens called the Na’vi and the technology that enables humans to pilot cloned versions of them, will be directed by James Cameron unless something unfortunate happens to him—like getting “hit by a bus”—per a new interview with the Oscar-winning filmmaker that was published this week, one in which he touches on various subjects, including his scientific documentary OceanXplorers and what is apparently a secret Terminator project. Avatar 4 is scheduled for release in 2029, while Avatar 5 is scheduled for release in 2031.

The Avatar film series will eventually comprise:

  • Avatar (2009)
  • Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
  • Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025)
  • Avatar 4 (2029)
  • Avatar 5 (2031)

Cameron said when asked if he planned to direct more Avatar films:

  • “Sure. Absolutely. I mean, they’re going to have to stop me. I got plenty of energy, love doing what I’m doing.”
  • “Why would I not? And they’re written, by the way. I just reread both of them about a month ago.”
  • “They’re cracking stories. They’ve got to get made.”
  • “Look, if I get hit by a bus and I’m in an iron lung, somebody else is going to do it.”

Some promos for the home releases of Avatar: The Way of Water:

As for what Cameron thinks of the new Terminator anime from Netflix:

I’d be curious to see what they’ve come up with. I’m working on my own Terminator stuff right now. It’s got nothing to do with that. Like with The Sarah Connor Chronicles, they occasionally touched on things I had been playing with completely independently. So there’s some curiosity there. It’s not a burning curiosity, but, obviously, it’d be nice to see it succeed.
