FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH, the 2024 action RPG from Square Enix that released exclusively for PS5 this year as a sequel to 2020’s FFVII REMAKE, will be followed by a third and conclusive installment in the series that may be developed on Unreal Engine 5, the latest iteration of Epic Games’ popular game engine, according to new comments shared by Naoki Hamaguchi, one of the directors behind the remake trilogy. FFVII REBIRTH and FFVII REMAKE, which originally launched in February 2024 and April 2020, respectively, were both developed under Unreal Engine 4.

Hamaguchi said (machine translation):

  • [Are you considering upgrading your development environment to UE5 for the next title?] “We’ll have to assess the pros and cons of the engine, but I think it’s possible. This is similar to considering whether to switch from SVN to Perforce.”
  • “…I think what our users want most right now is to deliver the final game in the series in a good form as soon as possible.”
  • “We’ll think about it objectively and decide whether changing the environment will accelerate that, or whether it’s best to make it all at once as it is.”
