Motherboards leveraging B850 and B840, two new 800 Series Socket AM5 chipsets that will complement AMD’s premium X870E and X870 options for Ryzen 9000/8000/7000 Series processors, will arrive in early 2025, according to a new report. David McAfee, Corporate VP and General Manager of the Client Channel Business at AMD, has described B850 as being the “cost-effective” option for enthusiasts, while B840 is the entry-level option, aimed at those who are satisfied with PCIe Gen 3 and don’t need CPU overclocking features.
New AM5 chipset release dates:
- X870 and X870E: September 2024
- B850 and B840: Early 2025
From a report (machine translation):
- “The grapevine among the many motherboard manufacturers represented at Gamescom 2024 narrows down AMD’s new mainstream B-series chipsets to early 2025.”
- “AMD has not given an official date for these solutions – but they didn’t do that with the X870/X870E either.”
- “As we know, these will not be released onto the market until the end of September.”
- “For now, the X870 and X870E versions are set to enjoy the unique selling point for a good quarter from the end of September, and new releases could be presented at CES 2025.”
A look at how the 800 Series chipsets compare:
AMD on its latest premium chipsets:
The Socket AM5 motherboard family features two new chipsets. Designed to seamlessly integrate with AMD Ryzen 9000 Series desktop processors, the new AMD X870E and X870 chipsets boast support for the latest technologies such as PCIe 5.0, DDR5, USB4, and WIFI7. Socket AM5 platforms are built to last, with support through 2027 and beyond.
These new chipsets feature USB4 as a standard feature and are also designed to support even faster DDR5 memory overclocking with AMD EXPO Technology. Both the X870 and X870E feature 44 total PCIe lanes and direct-to-processor PCIe 5.0 NVMe connectivity for the ultimate transfer speeds. The X870E is differentiated with 24 PCIe 5.0 lanes, with 16 lanes dedicated to graphics. When PCe 5.0 direct-to-processor storage and graphics care are enabled at the same time, the X870E offers twice the bandwidth of competing platforms.
