KB5041587, a new optional update for Windows 11 23H2 that includes AMD-specific branch prediction code for improving the performance of several generations of Ryzen processors, including Zen 3, Zen 4, and, most recently, Zen 5, can now be found under Windows Update > Advanced Options > Optional Updates in Windows 11, according to new information shared by AMD and Microsoft. The news comes a week after AMD told customers that it was working with Microsoft on a new update that would improve the performance of its Ryzen CPUs, one that would be available in Windows 11 version 24H2 in preview through the Windows Insider Program (Release Preview Channel – Build 26100).

AMD has told outlets:

  • “We wanted to let you know that the branch prediction optimization found in Windows 11 24H2 has now been backported to Windows 11 23H2.”
  • “Users will need to look for KB5041587 under Windows update > Advanced options > Optional updates.”
  • “We expect the performance uplift to be very similar between 24H2 and 23H2 with KB5041587 installed.”

AMD previously wrote:

When comparing to the competition using optimal settings, higher memory speed and extreme power delivery profile for the competition and Windows 11, version 24H2 for both, we see a double-digit lead for Ryzen 9000 Series in productivity and creator applications, ~30% lead in AI workloads, and parity in gaming using the most popular games included in the reviews.

“Zen 5” will see the biggest boost, but this Windows update will improve performance for “Zen 4” and “Zen 3” as well. We’re collaborating with Microsoft to roll out this optional update to all Windows 11 users soon.
