Age of Mythology: Retold, a modern version of the 2002 real-time strategy game from World’s Edge and Forgotten Empires that delivers several improvements to the original experience from Ensemble Studios, including completely revamped images and animations, is now available for Windows PCs and Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft and Xbox Game Studios has announced. The release of the game comes a month after a controversy regarding its art began brewing, with some players claiming that the portraits in the remake project were generated using AI. (A DLC pack that includes the original portraits for $5.99 is available.)
Players on Steam are saying:
- “Can’t wait for this game to get mass reported for it’s use of AI art. Do the Devs think that they can make Steam look stupid?”
- “looked up the art myself and drew my own conclusions. Once you’ve seen a good number of the images, it’s very obvious to anyone with an eye for it.”
- “some of them look absolutely terrible – a common symptom of ai generated images – especially with hands – but some look fine.”
- “glad I still own the original game but it’s pitiful that so many large game companies are this lazy. Glad so many of them are falling apart now.”
An investigation as to whether AI was used in the game:
