Star Wars Outlaws, the new open-world action-adventure game from Massive Entertainment, will receive extensive support from the Ubisoft-owned developer despite some increasing signs of the contrary, such as the lack of a real (i.e., non-hotfix) patch that addresses some of the issues that players have encountered on their journey since the game’s release on August 30 for PS5, Windows PCs, and Xbox Series X|S, according to new statements shared by creative director Julian Gerighty. Gerighty’s comments, which stem from a recent interview and include some of his thoughts regarding Outlaws’ reception by press and critics, come on the same week that Ubisoft shares were trading at their lowest levels since 2015, something that analysts say were prompted by Outlaws “struggling” to meet sales expectations.
Gerighty said:
- “I’m a little disappointed with the Metacritic; Of course, recognition from press and critics is very important to us, but players are really connecting with what we did.”
- “…this will be a game that millions of people are going to play for years and years, and we’re never going to stop improving it.”
- “Well, that’s a lie…we’ll probably stop improving it, but today my mind is not on stopping improving it.”
From a separate report:
- “[Ubisoft] shares, which closed 5.1% lower on Monday, were down 2.4% by 1114 GMT, trading at their lowest levels since 2015 and adding to their over 30% drop since the start of the year.”
- “The decline was driven by a muted reception of Star Wars Outlaws, released on Friday, which follows lower than expected interest for the company’s free-to-play game Xdefiant, said Midcap Partners analyst Charles-Louis Planade.”
- “‘Star Wars Outlaws has struggled to meet our sales expectations despite positive critical reviews,’ J.P.Morgan analyst Daniel Kerven said in a note.”
- “The game’s development budget was at least 30% higher than that of Assasin’s Creed Mirage, released last year, while data from video game live-streaming platform Twitch suggested it was underperforming AC Mirage by about 15%, Kerven added.”
- “Kerven also lowered his sales expectations for Outlaws by 2 million units, to 5.5 million units in the year through March 2025.”
