The Meta Quest 3S, a slimmer and cutback version of the existing Quest 3 mixed-reality headset from Meta that advertises 4K resolution, rich spatial audio, and other premium features, will be available at a starting price of $299.99 when it launches later this year, according to an Amazon ad that has surfaced on the Peacock streaming service. The new headset, which costs $200 less than the Quest 3 and is priced exactly the same as the Quest 2 was when it launched in 2020, is expected to be unveiled during Meta Connect 2024, a two-day event that is scheduled to run from September 25–26.

Meta’s currently listed headsets include:

  • Meta Quest 2: $199.99
  • Meta Quest 3: $499.99
  • Meta Quest Pro: $999.99

Customers are saying:

  • “Wow, so they got it down to $299. Massive for VR if the 3S flies like the 2. If they sweeten it with Batman bundled for Christmas we have ourselves a winner.”
  • “At $300, the 3S will definitely be a loss leader, but if it gets millions more people into the ecosystem, it’ll be worth it.”
  • “It’s basically the Quest 3, but with the fresnel lenses and lower resolution display from the Quest 2.”
  • “So it’ll be able to run everything the Quest 3 can and have the exact same software features, it just won’t look as sharp/clear.”
  • “…there are already placeholder listings on amazon…including a 256gb model”

Meta said of the Quest 3 during its announcement in September 2023:

With double the graphic processing power of Quest 2, Quest 3 is the world’s first device to feature the new Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform we helped develop in collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies. Load times are lightning fast, and incredibly crisp details in immersive games defy expectations — whether you’re solving puzzles on the far reaches of space in Red Matter 2 or hitting the links with friends on the other side of the world.
