The GeForce RTX 5090, a new flagship GPU based on NVIDIA’s “Blackwell” architecture that is expected to be announced by the end of the year for gamers and creators, has been rumored to feature a TGP/TDP of 600 watts, and if that spec turns out to be true, the graphics card better come with more than one power connector, according to new insight shared by Steve Burke, founder of Gamers Nexus. Burke, who published a video titled “12VHPWR is a Dumpster Fire” yesterday, suggested that he’d feel “uncomfortable” if such a GPU was released with just a single 12V-2×6 power connector, citing cable limitations. The full word from Burke can be found below.
For sake of discussion, if we momentarily assume it is 600 watts for the true TDP of this card, then our concern would be regarding running a single 12V-2×6 connector to the card. The cable itself is not rated for 675 watts, as we said earlier, and this is a common misconception that it is. Between the cable and its limited overhead and the PCIe slot, we would feel uncomfortable with how close these limits would be to the power consumption. If NVIDIA goes with two connectors, they’d have plenty of headroom…
