VR Games Market Is Dying, Survey Suggests as Apple Scales Down Production of Vision Pro

The Game Developer Collective, a community of game developers that Omdia launched in November 2023 to gather insight on key issues surrounding game development, has issued a new survey that suggests the VR games market is dying, with 56% of developers believing that the segment is currently in decline, or, at the very least, stagnating. The results of the survey were shared online just a day ahead of a new report that claims Apple has “sharply” scaled down the production of the Vision Pro, a headset that, despite being marketed as being a revolutionary spatial computer, is seemingly failing to sell for reasons that include its $3,500 price. The Game Developer Collective’s latest findings, which include a note about how Apple’s hardware has “done little to stimulate interest in VR,” can be found below.

Apple has sharply scaled back production of its Vision Pro mixed reality headset since the early summer and could stop making the existing version of the device entirely by year end, according to multiple people directly involved in building components for the device. The move suggests that Apple has enough inventory built up to meet demand for the foreseeable future. It follows Apple’s decision earlier this year to focus on building a model that’s cheaper than the current version—which retails for $3,500—for possible release by the end of 2025…
