After weeks of rumors and leaks the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D has been officially unveiled ahead of its November 7 launch. AMD Senior VP Jack Huynh released a video unveiling the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D where it was easy to see that AMD is pleased with its in-house testing of the processor which is expected to become the new king of gaming CPUs. Huynh wasted no time in pointing out its dominance over the recently released Intel Core Ultra 9 Processor 285K.
“Our competition just released their new flagship Arrow Lake desktop processor. We tested the product and the 9800X3D is on average 20% faster in gaming than their best. And in many games, such as Far Cry 6and Cyberpunk 2077, we are more than 40% faster.”
-Jack Huynh, AMD Senior VP and General Manager
It is now confirmed that AMD has indeed reversed the stacking of its CCD and Cache layers and has added that the new processor is the first X3D product to be overclockable, “And you’ve always asked for overclocking on X3D, and I’m so happy to announce that you now have that capability on the 9800X3D,” said Huynh. One thing that will sadden gamers is that AMD has increased the price of the new processor by $30 over its 7800X3D predecessor to $479. Beyond that, the official reveal has confirmed the vast majority of leaks and rumors including an increased clock rate of 500 MHz to 4.7 GHz and a boost clock rate of up to 5.2 GHz with a TDP of 120W. One thing to note in AMD’s specifications is that a liquid cooler is recommended.

AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D | 8C/16T | Up to 5.2 / 4.7 GHz | 104MB | 120W | $479 |
Per Press Release:
- “With the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor, AMD has re-engineered its cutting-edge on-chip memory solution with 2nd Gen AMD 3D V-Cache technology. The 64MB cache memory has been relocated below the processor, which puts the core complex die (CCD) closer to the cooling solution to help keep the “Zen 5” cores cooler, delivering high clock rates and providing up to an average 8% gaming performance improvement compared to our last-gen generation1 and up to an average 20% faster than the competition2. This revolutionary change in placement allows for extreme overclocking of the processor3. It’s the first X3D processor to be fully unlocked, empowering enthusiasts and gamers to push its performance to new limits.”
- “The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is the ultimate solution for the PC gaming market, with eight high-performance “Zen 5” processor cores and 16 processing threads ready to make quick work of gaming and productivity tasks. 4.7 GHz base clock speed is combined with a 5.2 GHz max boost clock6, and these represent the highest clock speeds ever on an X3D chiplet. A hearty 120W TDP and its huge 104MB of total cache provides the processor with the power it needs to perform.”
Game Developers join in the announcement
AMD was proud to include a number of gaming developers in announcing the highly awaited processor’s official reveal. William Gahagan of Activision, Tim Willits from Saber Interactive, and Szymon Jabłoński from 11 bit Studios all shared in the celebratory announcement.
