Digital Foundry has published a review for the PlayStation 5 Pro on the eve of the video game system’s launch, and with it comes a complementary video that shows what Game Boost—a PS5 Pro enhancement that Sony says “may stabilize or improve the performance of supported PS4 and PS5 games”—will do for titles that include Elden Ring, FromSoftware’s critically acclaimed 2022 action RPG. The PS5 Pro, which launches for $699.99 tomorrow, is unable to maintain 60 FPS in the game and falls short of the Radeon RX 6800, an RDNA 2 GPU that AMD launched in November 2020 for $579, according to frame rate data that can be seen in the video. Pre-orders for the system remain available at retailers that include Sony’s own PlayStation Direct store at the time of this posting.
…Sony has laid out how the new console can improve existing games, but it’s also gone out of its way not to say that there’s actually anything wrong with the standard model. Quite right too. The truth is, the standard PS5 is still the best choice for most people – but for the core enthusiast looking for the best possible experience, the Pro option is there for you, albeit with a substantial premium.
