An MSI statement regarding yesterday’s reported Ryzen 7 9800X3D damage incident has been posted, as another user reports a similar experience. MSI’s statement acknowledges that it is investigating the matter, as is GamersNexus, which is said to be in contact with the user of the first report and also working with AMD regarding it.

MSI Statement (via product news page):

  • “Recently, we received a user report indicating damage to an AMD Ryzenâ„¢ 7 9800X3D processor on an MSI MAG X870 TOMAHAWK WIFI motherboard. At MSI, we are fully committed to the quality of our products and have begun investigating this incident.”
  • “Additionally, we are working closely with AMD and are in contact with GamersNexus, which is independently investigating this incident.”
  • “We will continue to provide updates as the investigation progresses.”

Possible manufacturer defect?

Meanwhile, another user has shared images of a seemingly similar incident involving their MSI MAG X870 TOMAHAWK WIFI motherboard. This 2nd incident was posted in a thread on Quasar Zone regarding yesterday’s, and images show some similarities. Another user who replied in the thread pointed out the damage to both sockets’ plastic frame guide while damage to the pin sockets for both can also be seen. While user error is still suspected as can easily happen during CPU installation, the possibility of a potential manufacturer defect for the CPU socket is also suggested.

Below are images from both users. The first is from yesterday’s report, which MSI issued the statement for, and the 2nd is the one reported after.

It is still far too early to tell if these incidents are coincidental user errors or if there’s an actual defect involving the socket guide but hopefully, MSI, AMD, and GamersNexus will get to the bottom of it quickly. However, it is rumored within Quasar Zone’s thread that there are other reports circulating.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
