LG, one of today’s leading manufacturers of consumer and commercial products, has discontinued all of its 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray and Blu-ray disc players, marking an end to one of the South Korean conglomerate’s longer-lasting (but apparently unsuccessful) businesses. LG’s retreat from the Blu-ray player business can be confirmed via its online portals, with LG.com having seemingly removed its “Blu-ray & DVD Players” section entirely, now forwarding visitors to its lineup of 4K TVs instead. Discontinued models include the UBK80 (4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray Disc Player) and UBK90 (4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray Disc Player with Dolby Vision), both of which will only be available until existing inventory runs out. (Samsung and Oppo gave up on Blu-ray players in 2019, and 2018, respectively.)
…in a statement to FlatpanelsHD, LG Korea stopped short of confirming a definitive global exit from the optical disc player market, leaving the door open for a return if demand picks up. For now, a few old models remain available in regions such as America and Europe, but only until inventory runs out.
