HDMI 2.2, a new version of the ubiquitous (but proprietary) audio/video interface, will be introduced at CES 2025, according to an excerpt of a press release from the HDMI Forum that has been shared by several tech outlets. The new specification, which may or may not actually be called HDMI 2.2, is said to feature “next-generation” technology and higher bandwidth, enabling higher resolutions and refresh rates, as well as support for a new type of cable. HDMI 2.1, the latest iteration of the interface, was introduced in January 2017.

The HDMI Forum will announce a new version of the HDMI specification. The new specification, featuring next-generation HDMI technology and higher bandwidth, will enable a variety of higher resolutions and refresh rates and will be supported with a new HDMI cable. New technologies are enabling higher quality options for content producers such as television, film and game studios now and in the future, while also enabling multiple distribution platforms.
