A new rumor has indicated that the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D and 9900X3D CPUs will not have their clock speeds reduced. AMD surprised PC users with its 2nd-generation 3D V-Cache technology that debuted in the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor. That 8C/16T part was re-engineered to have its CCD and L3 cache stacking reversed so that the CCD is now on top and thus making direct contact with its IHS. This redesign allowed the Ryzen 7 9800X3D to be the first X3D processor with full overclockability. Now one thing to note though is that while there is currently no 9800X to compare to, the 9800X3D does have a 300 Hz lower boost clock speed than the 9700X.

Now according to hardware info leaker HXL, AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D (16c/32t) and 9900X3D (12t/24/c) CPU will have identical clock speeds as their non-X3D counterparts. HXL further shares that the Ryzen 9 9950X3D performs in Cinebench the same as the 9950X, both in single-core and multi-core tests.

Dual CCD 3D V-Cache?

It is still unknown if the Ryzen 9 9950X3D and 9900X3D processors would become the first in the X3D lineup to allow each CCD direct access to a 3D V-Cache. It was back in September when rumors early on suggested these processors could be the first to do so but a more recent rumor has countered that point. So far, AMD has had to rely on a software-based OS scheduler for delegating gaming tasks to the CCD that has access to the 3D V-Cache. However, when asked about that HXL responded with a reply that is open to interpretation.

AMD is expected to unveil the next additions to its X3D lineup at CES 2025. It has also been rumored that AMD intends to bring its 3D V-Cache technology to its high-end Threadripper CPUs and APUs. APUs with 3D V-Cache technology are said to debut in the mobile sector for notebooks. While gamers continue to be excited with the 9800X3D, and the prospects of what the 9950X3D and 9900X3D may offer, the idea of an X3D Threadripper poses some interesting possibilities.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
