The Compal Infinite laptop is turning heads with its expandable display, which increases in size from 14 inches to 18 inches, in a sleek user-friendly design. Laptop manufacturers continue to push the envelope with offering more features to aid in productivity on the go, and Compal is the first to introduce a concept with its display expanding horizontally instead of vertically. Up until now, if laptop users wanted to increase their display options horizontally, they needed to purchase screen(s) to either attach or set beside their laptop.
Lenovo and ASUS have previously unveiled solutions which expand vertically with hinged panels. ASUS has its Zenbook DUO with dual 14″ displays and Lenovo has its Yoga Book 9i with dual 13.3″ screens, both are OLED with detachable keyboards and can be used in landscape, portrait, tent(flipped) positions or with the keyboard on top of one of the screens for a more traditional setup. While these innovative designs offer increased screen real estate to work with, they do introduce added complications with hinges and unconventional screen aspect ratios. Compal has managed to, in essence, re-invent the wheel by making a small, portable laptop whose display expands horizontally thus giving the user a more familiar workspace where spreadsheets and similar data-intensive tasks would benefit.
Compal has not released technical specifications for its Infinite laptop but has indicated it will launch in Asia, North America, and Europe some time after 2025. It can be seen in images that the Compal Infinite laptop extends the screen from each side of the panel. Additionally, the display panel includes arrays of LEDs on its backside which are thought to be configurable for various types of message alerts. It has already won an iF Design Award 2025 for its unique design that is believed to use rollable OLED display technology, similar to that seen in Lenovo’s Thinkbook Plus featuring a Samsung display panel.
