Gameplay Performance

In the section below, we are comparing performance at 1440p (2650×1440) as this is the primary target resolution for the MSI GeForce RTX 5070 12G GAMING TRIO OC. We are using a factory-overclocked XFX Swift Radeon RX 9070 OC White Gaming Edition and stock clocked AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT video cards in addition to a factory-overclocked PowerColor Hellhound Radeon RX 7900 GRE. In games, we are selecting the highest preset.

Alan Wake 2

In Alan Wake 2, all the video cards are playable without upscaling. The XFX Swift Radeon RX 9070 OC White Gaming Edition takes the top spot by a good margin here, 25%. The MSI GeForce RTX 5070 12G GAMING TRIO OC even sits behind the PowerColor Hellhound Radeon RX 7900 GRE by 5%. Upscaling doesn’t change the showing. Overclocking our card gains us 11% and does slide into second place when applied.

Black Myth: Wukong

MSI GeForce RTX 5070 12G GAMING TRIO OC: performance ; Black Myth: Wukong

Even at 1440p, this is a tough game graphically. None of the cards is playable without upscaling, and even then, only two of four. Once again, the XFX Swift Radeon RX 9070 OC White Gaming Edition takes the top spot until you apply overclocking. The MSI GeForce RTX 5070 12G GAMING TRIO OC is at an advantage with overclocking by 7% but falls back by 5% at default clocks. Overclocking gains 10% in this game. The older two cards are simply not playable.

Cyberpunk 2077

MSI GeForce RTX 5070 12G GAMING TRIO OC: performance ; Cyberpunk 2077

All the video cards are quite fast in this game. Upscaling is not necessary. Quite a change from just two years ago. While the MSI GeForce RTX 5070 12G GAMING TRIO OC is fast here it still falls behind the XFX Swift Radeon RX 9070 OC White Gaming Edition by 12%. Even the PowerColor Hellhound Radeon RX 7900 GRE sneaks up with upscaling by 6%. Overclocking once again helps even things out, but still not enough. Overall, overclocking gains 10% in this game.

Horizon Forbidden West

MSI GeForce RTX 5070 12G GAMING TRIO OC: performance ; Horizon Forbidden West

Horizon is nicely playable without upscaling, which just makes things that much faster. In default and overclocked, the MSI GeForce RTX 5070 12G GAMING TRIO OC just can’t keep up. It trails the XFX Swift Radeon RX 9070 OC White Gaming Edition by over 20%. The older video cards darn near catch up as well.

Kingdom Come: Deliverence II

MSI GeForce RTX 5070 12G GAMING TRIO OC: performance ; Kingdom Come:Deliverence II

We have arrived at a raster game in which the MSI GeForce RTX 5070 12G GAMING TRIO OC finally prevails. Every video card except the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT plays this game smoothly without upscaling. Once upscaled, they are all playable. The MSI GeForce RTX 5070 12G GAMING TRIO OC takes over the top spot by 9% and 18% over the XFX Swift Radeon RX 9070 OC White Gaming Edition. Overclocking adds over 7% and further boosts the MSI GeForce RTX 5070 12G GAMING TRIO OC.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl

MSI GeForce RTX 5070 12G GAMING TRIO OC: performance ; STALKER2: Heart of Chornobyl

Three out of four cards are playable in this UnReal Engine-based game. Again, there is a split decision, depending on overclocking. The MSI GeForce RTX 5070 12G GAMING TRIO OC runs well here and even better if overclocked. The margin over the XFX Swift Radeon RX 9070 OC White Gaming Edition is 3% but a loss by 6% at default clocks.

Star Wars Outlaws

In Star Wars: Outlaws, the XFX Swift Radeon RX 9070 OC White Gaming Edition and the MSI GeForce RTX 5070 12G GAMING TRIO OC are the only two cards playable without upscaling. The XFX Swift Radeon RX 9070 OC White Gaming Edition is tops by 4%. The results are very close with overclocking, which gains between 4% and 7%. The gap between the older two cards is 20%.

SUMMARY

Our review is of the MSI GeForce RTX 5070 12G GAMING TRIO OC. This video card is well built and superbly cooled. The GeForce RTX 5070 GPU itself is lackluster compared to the new competition, and the competition gives it, well, some competition at this price point. The performance in ray tracing is somewhat better but only at very low resolutions. The overclocking capability of the card is very good and may be what makes the overall performance difference in many games. The MSI GeForce RTX 5070 GAMING TRIO OC makes a great addition to MSI's RTX 5070 lineup, and offers a more affordable RTX 5070.
