New rumors indicate that AMD will be choosing to name its forthcoming RDNA 5 lineup after iconic characters from the Transformers. Once again, Kepler has let loose a rumor that has many in the tech community left wondering what to think. This time around, it’s being said that AMD’s internal naming schema for its next round of graphics technology will revolve around the classic animated series. In the past, AMD has used oceanic and artistic-themed names for its consumer offerings, some quite humorous, such as Hotpink Bonefish or Navy Flounder, but for RDNA 5, it looks like there could be more than meets the eye!
Originally posted in the AnandTech forums, Kepler was also asked by VideoCardz about the new names, as there was some confusion regarding them. Alpha Trion, one of the most ancient of characters in Transformers lore, is said to be the codename for the entire RDNA 5/GFX13 lineup.
Alpha Trion is for the whole GMD lineup, Magnus is for Xbox and Orion for PS6

Kepler’s original post indicated two other names with Orion (Pax), who, of course, goes on to become the Autobot leader Optimus Prime, and then Magnus, as is Ultra Magnus, the Autobot 2nd in command, who typically prefers to serve in a soldier capacity rather than a leader. This being said, Orion could likely be the codename for AMD’s flagship GPU, with Magnus for its midrange or entry-level offering(s). It was also stated that Magnus would be used as the codename for the custom RDNA 5-based SoC in Sony’s and Microsoft’s upcoming next-gen consoles as well.
Meanwhile, it is believed that AMD could officially unveil its next round of graphics cards at either CES 26 in January or perhaps a little later at Computex. Rival GPU manufacturer NVIDIA is rumored to unveil its Blackwell GPU refresh, aka SUPER series, either during the upcoming holiday season or at CES 26 as well. So, regardless of when, folks might see new offerings from both roll out by mid-2026.
