A third installment, which would directly follow Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, could be in the works, according to MachineGames. Jerk Gustafsson, MachineGames co-founder and studio head, has made it clear that the Wolfenstein games were always intended to be a trilogy and that a 3rd game could still be forthcoming. Rather than working on said third installment, the studio has been busy in recent years working on Indiana Jones and The Great Circle, along with its recently released paid DLC The Secret Order of Giants, but perhaps now that these are out of the way, it can get back to the games that helped make the studio famous.
“I think this is important to say, because we have always seen this as a Trilogy.”
-Jerk Gustafsson, MachineGames co-founder and studio head
Details about past, present, and potential future Wolfenstein games were revealed in a new making-of documentary (as spotted by VGC) video featuring Gustafsson. It’s during this that the studio head lays out the larger story arc, which has always been planned. Interestingly enough, the prequel Wolfenstein: The Old Blood was originally planned as DLC for the second game until it was released as a separate game, while Young Blood was always expected to be a spin-off. The following quotes are transcribed via YouTube.
“The first game is very much about BJ and how He actually, and, obviously, he understands that the Nazis have won the war, but it’s also a very personal journey for him.”
-Jerk Gustafsson, MachineGames co-founder and studio head
“And then, moving into New Colossus, then we move into a wider group of people around you, being part of the resistance, something bigger and something also… like a family to you, but at the same time you’re also preparing to start maybe your own family.”
-Jerk Gustafsson, MachineGames co-founder and studio head
When we’ll see a third game is anyone’s guess, but the team behind it is still hoping to get it made. The last mention of this was roughly five years ago, but that was around the time they were retasked to work on Indiana Jones.
“I think that’s important to say, because – at least, I hope we’re not done with Wolfenstein yet. We have a story to tell”
-Jerk Gustafsson, MachineGames co-founder and studio head
