GOG has added more games to its Preservation Program library, which now totals nearly 250 titles with a goal of 350 by year’s end. While there are a number of sites available hosting files for older titles of days gone by, GOG’s Preservation Program sets itself apart by updating these classics with features to allow them to be played on high-resolution settings, newer display modes, and operating systems. These titles may not be free, but they can often be had for pennies on the dollar, as you can literally snag some for ~$1.00 per during GOG’s Autumn sale and come with tech support even if the original developers are no longer providing it.

“The GOG Preservation Program ensures classic games remain playable on modern systems, even after their developers stopped supporting them. By maintaining these iconic titles, GOG helps you protect and relive the memories that shaped you, DRM-free and with dedicated tech support.

Very recently, GOG added the original Resident Evil trilogy, something that Capcom was resistant to doing in light of the success of their various remakes over the years, but as reported by VGC, GOG was able to convince them to allow it. Marcin Paczyński, GOG Preservation Program founder and senior business development manager, said that they had to explain to Capcom that there is an audience for older titles who love the originals and want to keep playing them. It should also be noted that two other Capcom classics, Dino Crisis 1 and 2, preceded the RE titles at the start of 2025. Meanwhile, other publishers continue to get on board, and the library is growing.

The latest batch includes Hitman: Codename 47, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, and Tomb Raider GOTY, but also the iconic Battle Chess 4000 and more. In keeping with the spirit of the season, there are a number of spooky-themed titles to choose from.

  • Battle Chess 4000
  • Bloodwych
  • Call of Cthulhu: Prisoner of Ice
  • Clive Barker’s Undying
  • Elvira: Mistress of the Dark
  • Elvira II: The Jaws of Cerberus
  • Heart of China
  • Hitman: Codename 47
  • North & South
  • Nostradamus: The Last Prophecy
  • Spore Collection
  • Superhero League of Hoboken
  • Thunderscape
  • Titus The Fox: To Marrakech and Back
  • Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell
  • Tomb Raider GOTY

Who knows what games will arrive before the end of the year, but if GOG’s goal is achieved, then there should be roughly 100 more added in the coming months. If there’s a title not already in the Preservation Program that people want added, they can simply go to GOG.com Dreamlist to add their vote for it.

“Time is erasing the games that shaped you. Forgotten, incompatible, unplayable.

We can fight back.”

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
