Throughput Benchmarks (SEQ and RND)

CrystalDiskMark

The ORICO K20 Mini 1TB Ultra-thin Magnetic Portable SSD is rated at up to 2000MB/s read performance, and the write performance is not specified. In our testing, we found that the K20Mini hit 2099MB/s read performance and 1893MB/s on write performance in SEQ1M Q8T1. Therefore, it is meeting or exceeding the specified read performance, and the write performance seems to be just shy of 1900MB/s. If we compare this to the other USB 20Gbps external SSDs, we find that the ORICO K20 Mini is actually the fastest drive here in both read and write performance, significantly outclassing the MSI DATAMAG 20Gbps Magnetic Portable SSD, and even edging out the ADATA SC740. It seems to be a winner in sequential performance.

This is backed up in the SEQ128K Q32T1 testing as well, with the ORICO K20 Mini again outclassing both external SSDs on read and write performance. It outshines the MSI DATAMAG 20Gbps Magnetic Portable SSD by a large margin.

Unfortunately, that is where the benefits end. The ORICO K20 Mini 1TB Ultra-thin Magnetic Portable SSD is very strong in sequential performance, but when we get to the random read and write performance, it falls below quite severely, according to CrystalDiskMark. The ORICO K20Mini had the lowest read performance, at a paltry 33MB/s, which is substantially lower than the other two 20Gbps external portable SSDs. This was, in fact, so severe that we spent hours trying different methods and options to fix it, and we could not. The write performance also falls below the ADATA SC740, and the MSI DATAMAG is a clear winner in random write performance.

The trend of the random performance continues in RND4K Q1T1, where the read performance falls below everything else quite severely, but the write performance is actually on par with the ADATA SC740. The MSI DATAMAG seems to have stronger random performance metrics. However, for sequential performance, the ORICO K20 Mini 1TB Ultra-thin Magnetic Portable SSD kills it.

ATTO

In ATTO, the ORICO K20 Mini 1TB Ultra-thin Magnetic Portable SSD performs very strongly. It is able to surpass both external portable SSDs quite substantially. It again overtakes the MSI DATAMAG quite a bit on read performance. On write performance, it is above the ADATA SC740, but the MSI DATAMAG surpasses it on write performance. It’s overall a good result, however.
