Killzone, a series of first-person shooters from Guerrilla Games that remains fondly remembered by PlayStation fans for its dystopian, wartorn settings and intense gameplay, is due for a return, according to recent discussions on social media that have been sparked by a new report about how Hermen Hulst, the co-founder of Guerrilla Games and industry executive who was appointed CEO of SIE’s Studio Business Group in May, now leads Bungie. Hulst previously served at Guerrilla as its Managing Director, overseeing games that include the original Killzone—a game that, ironically, was labeled a “Halo Killer” during its inception.

The Killzone series currently comprises:

  • Killzone (PS2, 2004)
  • Killzone: Liberation (PSP, 2006)
  • Killzone 2 (PS3, 2009)
  • Killzone 3 (PS3, 2011)
  • Killzone Trilogy (PS3, 2012)
  • Killzone: Mercenary (PS Vita, 2013)
  • Killzone: Shadow Fall (PS4, 2013)

Fans are saying:

  • “Probably way to soon as they are focusing on Destiny and Marathon for the next years but just imagine a Killzone made by Bungie lmaoo”
  • “A Killzone game made by Bungie under Herman Hulst’s supervision might just be enough to bring the franchise back.”
  • “What is hilarious right is the man who led guerilla who were making a halo killer in the 2000s in the form of Killzone now runs the studio they tried to beat.”
  • “I love Killzone’s lore and how ‘realistic’ it feels. It’s shame the IP is gathering dust.”
  • “Idc, I will pay full price for a Killzone collection remaster WITH the multiplayer. Halo chasing or not, I loved that games like KZ, Resistance, and Mass Effect had fleshed out and FUN additions to a full single player game for free.”

The original word from Jeff Grubb:

A classic interview with Hulst:

Bungie’s Pete Parsons mentioned yesterday as part of the studio’s layoffs:

First, we are deepening our integration with Sony Interactive Entertainment, working to integrate 155 of our roles, roughly 12%, into SIE over the next few quarters. SIE has worked tirelessly with us to identify roles for as many of our people as possible, enabling us together to save a great deal of talent that would otherwise have been affected by the reduction in force.

Second, we are working with PlayStation Studios leadership to spin out one of our incubation projects – an action game set in a brand-new science-fantasy universe – to form a new studio within PlayStation Studios to continue its promising development.
