Today marks the launch of the GOG Preservation Program, a new project that the digital distribution platform for video games (and films) says is designed to ensure that classic games remain playable on modern systems, even after their developers have stopped supporting them. As of this posting, the program already comprises 100 fan-favorite games, including System Shock 2, Fallout: New Vegas, and the original Diablo from Blizzard Entertainment. See below for a video from GOG for an overview of the program, one in which the company says it’s committed to ensuring their compatibility for future generations.
The GOG Preservation Program is an official stamp on classic games that GOG has improved, with a commitment from GOG to maintain their compatibility. Our original promise to classic game creators was that we’d offload all the work from their hands and ensure that games remain compatible with modern systems forever.
That’s why we are announcing a new project to make games live forever: The GOG Preservation Program, an official stamp on classic games improved by GOG. We commit our own resources to maintaining their compatibility with modern systems.
