It’s still too early to say for sure, but if early access reviews are any indication, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 looks like the game fans of the franchise have been waiting years for. Early access began last week, with the official launch happening for some at midnight on October 22, and globally on October 23. Meanwhile, SteamDB already ranks the game at nearly 90% based on over 3,000 reviews.

The good news doesn’t stop there, as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 currently has a mostly positive ranking on its Steam store page as well, from almost half of its 3,000-plus reviews. This, so far, is a welcome change of direction for COD fans after the abysmal launch of Black Ops 7 and its predecessor, which did only slightly better. Both previous Black Ops entries, at best, are barely ranked at half-best as the latest Modern Warfare entry. Activision is well aware that it needed to turn things around for the twenty-year-old franchise after seeing player counts continuing to drop until the point that rival shooter Battlefront took the crown as most popular between the two during Black Ops 7 launch. Activision Chief Marketing Officer Tyler Bahl acknowledged the need for improvement and said a greater focus was placed on getting back to the basics of the franchise to restore its edge and cinematic, immersive experience. “I don’t think we were happy with every aspect of last year’s game, and we heard the feedback loud and clear,” said Tyler in a recent interview addressing the need to fix the franchise.

The Call of Duty franchise has a long history of development being shared among different studios. From Infinity Ward to Raven Software, Treyarch, and many more, there are roughly two dozen mainline games and about the same for mobile and other spinoffs. Factoring all this in means that there’s a significant risk of oversaturation and player burnout, and there’s bound to be hits and misses. When it comes to what sticks on the wall, at this point you have to wonder what’s sticking onto, or not, the many previous layers already present on said wall. Praise for the latest game appears to be mostly for its campaign, with users stating that it’s a memorable experience and possibly one of the best stories in years.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
