At the beginning of the year, there was a leaked trailer for Monster Hunter. The footage came via the 2019 Shanghai International Film Festival, and not much else was heard about it after that. Well, it seems someone forgot to tell Sony Pictures Entertainment that many theaters are re-closing again because it just released a teaser trailer with the Black Diablos.
Behind our world, there is another: a world of dangerous and powerful monsters that rule their domain with deadly ferocity. When an unexpected sandstorm transports Captain Artemis (Milla Jovovich) and her unit (TI Harris, Meagan Good, Diego Boneta) to a new world, the soldiers are shocked to discover that this hostile and unknown environment is home to enormous and terrifying monsters immune to their firepower. In their desperate battle for survival, the unit encounters the mysterious Hunter (Tony Jaa), whose unique skills allow him to stay one step ahead of the powerful creatures. As Artemis and Hunter slowly build trust, she discovers that he is part of a team led by the Admiral (Ron Perlman). Facing a danger so great it could threaten to destroy their world, the brave warriors combine their unique abilities to band together for the ultimate showdown.
Sony is hoping to release this movie to theaters in December. We’ll see how that goes, but it could still happen. Between theater closures and many other movies being pushed back, the odds seem against them. Interestingly enough, this teaser trailer seems a bit reminiscent of Michael Bay’s first Transformers movie. The film is directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, who has written and directed a number of Capcom’s Resident Evil movies. Monster Hunter also features that franchise’s longtime veteran, Milla Jovovich.
For better or worse, the movie is reversing a trend seen in the game. In the game, it is not uncommon for guests to appear from other dimensions to aid the hunters. The movie, however, seems to be based on Earth, while the monsters and hunters are guests. Let’s hope that the game’s history and imagery are not further replaced with more generic visuals as seen in this teaser trailer.
