No more foreplay. The developers of GoldenEye 25 have revealed that their free remake of Rare’s beloved N64 shooter, which was supposed to release in time for the film’s 25th anniversary, is dead and buried. According to a statement posted on Twitter, 007 license holders MGM and Danjaq contacted the team and “kindly” encouraged them to terminate the Unreal Engine-based project.
“This was always in the back of our heads as a possibility, but we’ve tried our best to keep going,” the team wrote. “We cannot do a Bond game but we can still do a great game with all the beloved aspects of our favourite ’90s action shooter.”

GoldenEye 007 isn’t only one of the Nintendo 64’s best titles; it’s also one of the greatest first-person shooters ever, so this news is super disappointing. That’s especially true when you consider how great GoldenEye 25 looked for a fan project (check out the comparison shot below of the Janus Control Center).
