Microsoft has released a new game plan for its older browsers, Internet Explorer 11 and Edge (Legacy). According to a timeline published on the official Microsoft 365 Blog, Microsoft Teams will no longer support IE11 on November 30, 2020. Microsoft Edge Legacy is also reaching end of life on March 9, 2021, and on August 17, 2021, Microsoft 365 will no longer support IE11, either.

What this means is that Microsoft wants everyone on its new Chromium-based Edge browser, stat. “For degraded experiences, new Microsoft 365 features will not be available or certain features may cease to work when accessing the app or service via IE 11,” the company wrote. “While we know this change will be difficult for some customers, we believe that customers will get the most out of Microsoft 365 when using the new Microsoft Edge.”

To be clear, Microsoft Edge Legacy will not be receiving any new security updates after March 9, 2021. Internet Explorer 11, on the other hand, “isn’t going away” because of its enterprise affiliations – but with the loss of Microsoft 365 compatibility, it’s clear that Microsoft wants to make it history sooner rather than later.
