TVLine has learned that Fox is developing an animated comedy spin-off of The X-Files called The X-Files: Albuquerque. This may seem like a weird idea, but it shouldn’t come as a shock to die-hard fans, as the original show had a good amount of funny, light-hearted episodes (e.g., “Jose Chung’s From Outer Space”).

Unfortunately, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson won’t be involved. That’s because the show revolves around a new “B-team” of misfits. (Why the FBI would keep a team like that around, we have no idea.)

“The new iteration is an animated series about an office full of misfit agents who investigate the X-Files cases too wacky, ridiculous or downright dopey for Mulder & Scully to bother with,” TVLine wrote. “They’re basically the X-Files’ B-team.”

Series creator Chris Carter is attached to executive produce, however. Carter previously hinted that he was open to another traditional season of The X-Files, but apparently, Gillian Anderson has no interest in returning as Scully.

“I think there are lots more stories to tell and ways to tell them,” Carter said. “I’m leaving this as a giant cliffhanger, and Gillian has announced that she’s not coming back. Hard-core X-Files fans know there have been no real endings on the show.”
