The folks over at 2K Games and Gearbox Software have been extra busy this year working on their Borderlands franchise. Borderlands 3 launched on Steam back in February. This followed its timed release on the Epic Games Store in September. There was even crossplay support between the two. After a rocky start and some patching, it went on to receive DLC. Throughout the year, free versions of the original were made available. A new movie was even announced, and now they are looking forward to a next-gen console edition.

Borderlands 3 is joining a quickly growing list of games set to be released for next-gen consoles. It will also incorporate something else that is becoming a new normal for current console owners. Those who purchased it on the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One will be able to upgrade for free on their next-gen counterparts. This is not the only update happening, either.

More Features and DLC Forthcoming

We’re excited to confirm that Borderlands 3 will be playable on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PlayStation 5, with the Series X and PS5 supporting 4K resolution at 60 fps in single-player. With the power of the new consoles comes new features, including additional ways to enjoy local play: three- and four-player split-screen will be available on the next-gen consoles. Additionally, we’ve heard your two-player split-screen feature requests loud and clear: vertical split-screen in two-player co-op will be available in Borderlands 3’s next-gen versions, and will also be added to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions via a free update.

Gearbox Software Creative Director Graeme Timmins shared the news that another paid DLC is coming later this year, bringing an additional Skill Tree for each Vault Hunter and more to those who purchase it. We got a first look at FL4K the Beastmaster’s new Trapper Skill Tree, which features the powerful Gravity Snare Action Skill and a lovable line of Hyperion Loaderbots as a new pet type.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
