Entertainment Weekly has shared some photos for director Simon McQuoid’s reboot of Mortal Kombat. The photos give us a first look at some of the franchise’s most iconic characters, such as Sub-Zero (The Raid’s Joe Taslim), Scorpion (The Last Samurai’s Hiroyuki Sanada), Liu Kang (Power Rangers’ Ludi Lin), Raiden (Thor’s Tadanobu Asano), Jax (Supergirl’s Mehcad Brooks), and Sonya Blade (The Meg’s Jessica McNamee).

The reboot appears to center around a completely new character named Cole, a “washed-up” MMA fighter played by Wu Assassins’ Lewis Tan. This isn’t the best news for fans who were expecting the movie to trail closer to Paul W. S. Anderson’s 1995 Mortal Kombat, which revolved around classic hero Liu Kang, but the film does seem to promise plenty of involvement from the core roster, as well as other franchise staples such as the series’ gratuitous violence and fatalities.

“There are some crazy fatalities,” Tan confirmed. “We’ve picked a couple of iconic ones. There’s a lot of really cool signature moves that you’ll see, a lot of Easter eggs that we snuck into the film, but there are some really badass fatalities that I can’t wait to see on the big screen. They’re brutal, man. They, they don’t hold back.”

Mortal Kombat is scheduled for release on April 16, 2021. This happens to be a Warner Bros. film, which means that HBO Max subscribers will be able to enjoy it on the same day that it hits theaters.
