Have you ever wanted to pit a mob of 10,000 angry chickens against an army of Romans, or an equally enormous company of World War II soldiers against medieval ones? Brilliant Game Studios will let you do exactly that in its novel sandbox title, Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator, which is free for a limited time on Steam. Players can take control of Roman centurions, knights, orcs, trolls, and more as part of a massive army whose numbers are only limited by the power of system hardware.

“Unfortunately there really aren’t many engines that you can chuck 10,000 characters in and expect good performance,” the developer wrote in a blurb about the game’s technology. “This is why I worked months on end to create the most powerful crowd rendering system ever conceived in Unity engine. The detail of each character has little effect on performance while each individual acts independently, but is working towards a greater good for his team. Each individual decides his own path and navigates complex environments.”

“But I didn’t stop there! With the large open environments, I needed a more dynamic lighting solution than the one built in to Unity engine. So I built my own dynamic global illumination lighting engine. This enables bounce light completely in real time. What does that mean? That means every piece of shiny armor is reflecting it’s true surroundings, every bright surfaces illuminates it’s surroundings and effects the overall lighting.”

It appears that Brilliant Game Studios made Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator free on Steam to drum up interest for its sequel, which was announced earlier today. You can check out the announcement video for Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator 2 below, which ups the carnage with the potential for millions of characters on screen. The sequel also features multiple campaigns and new technology that allows for even bigger, smarter battles.

UEBS2 features revolutionary new crowd rendering and AI technology which uses pure GPU POWER to bring nation size battles to life!,” the developer revealed. “UEBS2 handles 100 times more characters on screen than its predecessor, and in far greater detail and quality. Details were not ignored, every individual has highly advanced decision making and animation, all while working together for a greater goal.”

“We are also working hard on our own ‘mass’ GPU physics engine. Our hope is to bring physics to a scale never before seen, which may allow thousands of ragdolls, and millions of physics based objects. Keep in mind, our physics engine is in very early development so we can’t make any guarantees.”
