It was recently revealed that many laptop manufacturers would not be indicating whether GeForce 30 Series mobile GPUs were of the Max-P or Max-Q variety, making it harder for buyers to identify the model that best suits their needs. Presently there are three base models, the GeForce RTX 3060, 3070, and 3080 mobile. ComputerBase obtained a list of the many variants.

The GeForce RTX 3060 mobile uses the GA106 GPU. Power has been reduced from 60 to 115 watts vs. the desktop version (170 watts). It also features 256 more CUDA cores but half the memory. Interestingly, the most powerful version of RTX 3060 mobile comes closest to resembling its desktop counterpart. The base clock is slightly higher, while the boost has been reduced.

The GeForce RTX 3070 mobile features the same GA104 GPU as the desktop version. Power has been reduced from 220 watts to 80 to 125 watts. CUDA Cores have been reduced from 5888 to 5120. The boost clocks have also been significantly reduced, while the higher-end models have the same memory specs.

The GeForce RTX 3080 mobile is based on the GA104 GPU. Even the most powerful version uses less than half the wattage of the Founders Edition. It also has 2560 fewer CUDA cores. Instead of 10 GB of 19 Gbps GDDR6 memory, it comes with either 8 GB or 16 GB operating at 12 Gbps or 14 Gbps on a 256-bit bus. One review has shown that it trades blows with RTX 3070 mobile and comes out ahead on some occasions.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
