Paramount Pictures has revealed that the sequel to its highly successful 2020 video game adaptation, Sonic the Hedgehog, will be released on April 8, 2022. The date was confirmed in a video tweeted by the official Sonic the Hedgehog account this morning, which noted that the blue blur would be back on the silver screen next spring.

“Groundbreaking. Thought provoking. Extremely obvious,” the official Sonic the Hedgehog account tweeted. “Presenting the official title of the #SonicMovie sequel: Sonic the Hedgehog 2! Catch #SonicMovie2 in theatres in 2022.”

Paramount released its first Sonic the Hedgehog feature on February 14, 2020. The film managed to earn $70 million in its first four days—an interesting feat in light of the controversy over Sonic’s initial design, which looked nothing like the Sega mascot that gamers knew and loved. Luckily, Paramount was wise enough to delay the movie so the animation team could render a Sonic that was more faithful to Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima’s original design.

“The world needed a hero — it got a hedgehog,” a synopsis for the original film reads. “Powered with incredible speed, Sonic embraces his new home on Earth — until he accidentally knocks out the power grid, sparking the attention of uncool evil genius Dr. Robotnik. Now, it’s supervillain vs. supersonic in an all-out race across the globe to stop Robotnik from using Sonic’s unique power to achieve world domination.”
