Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard will direct a sequel to John Woo’s 1997 action classic, Face/Off. The news was revealed by Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr. earlier this week, who has since confirmed that the film will follow on the heels of the original rather than serve as a remake or reimagining as initial reports had indicated.

“Paramount Pictures has chosen You’re Next and Godzilla Vs. Kong director Adam Wingard to helm […] Face/Off, the 1997 John Woo-directed action thriller that starred John Travolta and Nicolas Cage,” Fleming reported. “Wingard will write the script with his scripting partner Simon Barrett and the studio will reboot the film, with new cast. Neal Moritz will produce and David Permut will be executive producer.”

“In the original, Travolta played FBI agent Sean Archer. He is so obsessed with catching a homicidal sociopath named Castor Troy, who is responsible for killing the fed’s son, that the agent undergoes facial transplant surgery and takes the mug of his nemesis so he can be sent to prison to find out a bomb’s whereabouts and stop an attack.”

Face/Off was the third film that John Woo directed after establishing himself in Hollywood with Hard Target (1993) and Broken Arrow (1996), the latter of which also starred John Travolta. Travolta’s character (Sean Archer) could easily make a return for the Face/Off sequel since he’s still alive, but Nicholas Cage’s Casper Troy might show up too depending on how creative the writers want to get.
