Deadline has learned that Man of Steel and The Witcher star Henry Cavill has been tapped to play the lead in Lionsgate’s upcoming reboot of Highlander, its popular fantasy action-adventure franchise. While there are no plot details at the moment, Cavill will presumably follow in the footsteps of Christopher Lambert’s Connor MacLeod and Sean Connery’s Ramirez as an immortal who battles others like him in a secret war for ultimate power. John Wick director Chad Stahelski will be helming the film.

The original 1986 Highlander pic starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown as immortal beings, hunting down one another and collecting more power. The film — with its “There can be only one” catchphrase — spawned four sequels and three television series including the popular USA series starring Adrian Paul.
