Paramount Pictures recently confirmed that it would be releasing a seventh live-action Transformers film called Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, which will introduce the Maximals, Predacons, and Terrorcons from the popular Beast Wars: Transformers storyline. Collider has learned that actor Ron Perlman (Hellboy, Sons of Anarchy) has signed on to voice the leader of the Maximals, Optimus Primal—a descendant of Optimus Prime who transforms into a large robotic ape rather than a trailer truck. Perlman is a natural choice, as the actor actually provided the voice for the character in the animated TV series Transformers: Power of the Primes. Set in the ’90s and directed by Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II), Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is scheduled for release on June 24, 2022.

In addition to leading the Maximals, Optimus Primal is the captain of the spaceship Axalon. In battle, he is a brave and honorable warrior — loyal to his friends and respectful of his enemies — though he’s willing to do whatever it takes to fight the good fight. In Transformers lore, he once saved the life of his legendary namesake, Optimus Prime, and he had a rivalry with Megatron, the commander of the Predacons. Though the Axalon computers suggested his beast mode be a bat, he rejected it in favor of the more powerful gorilla.
