Blizzard announced Overwatch 2 in November 2019, a sequel to its 2016 team-based multiplayer shooter that rose to popularity thanks to its ease of entry and colorful roster of anime-inspired characters called “heroes,” all of which feature unique abilities. It may be well over a year before anyone will be able to play the game, however.

According to Overwatch streamer Metro_OW’s sources, Overwatch 2’s development is moving at much too slow of a pace for it to achieve a 2022 release date. The implication is that Overwatch 2 won’t be available until 2023 at the earliest.

This is a bit of problem for Overwatch players who have continued to support the game and not just those who are merely impatient, as the franchise’s developers have reportedly dropped most support for the original 2016 game so they can focus their efforts entirely on the sequel.

Assuming that there’s any truth behind Overwatch 2 suffering a delay all the way into 2023, there is a real worry that the franchise could be dead in the eyes of players due to another potential year or so without major updates.

Blizzard doesn’t seem to have changed much in terms of art direction for Overwatch 2, but the sequel will attempt to improve upon the original with new game types and other additions. These include new player versus environment (PvE) content such as Hero Missions, as well as a story campaign that should better flesh out each of the shooter’s heroes. Players can also expect some smaller changes like dynamic weather.

Overwatch 2 [is] a globe-spanning sequel that builds on the original’s battle-honed foundation and carries forward everything players have earned into a new era of epic competition and team play. In addition to clashing against rivals in PvP modes, players will explore the Overwatch universe firsthand in whole new ways in fully cooperative missions that challenge the world’s heroes to team up, power up, and take on an overwhelming outbreak of threats around the globe.
