11 bit studios has announced Frostpunk 2, a sequel to its critically acclaimed, BAFTA-nominated society survival game that blends city building, strategy, and management gameplay.

Frostpunk 2 takes place 30 years after the deadly and apocalyptic blizzard storm that arrives at the end of the original’s campaign, reintroducing a chilly world that must move beyond coal burning and into new sources of energy—namely oil—to survive and ensure the continuation of the human race.

Players will seek out this new source of power as the leader of a metropolis that is hungry for resources and presumably on the brink of collapse. Complicating the process will be various factions, some of which are unwilling to become players in an oil extraction industry.

Frostpunk 2’s Steam, GOG, and Epic Games Store listings are already up for fans of the original who want to wishlist the game, but 11 bit studios hasn’t provided a release date for the title yet.

Frostpunk was being offered for free on the Epic Games Store back in June.

Frostpunk 2 builds on the conflicts of its predecessor – survival vs human values, life vs the arctic frost. But most importantly, it adds a new layer that is present in many aspects of the game – be it politics, be it society, be it technological progress – the conflict between humans and their nature” – Jakub Stokalski, Frostpunk 2 Co-Director.
