IGN and Marvel Entertainment have shared the first gameplay footage for Marvel’s Midnight Suns, a new strategy game developed by XCOM studio Firaxis Games.

A tactical RPG set in the darker side of the Marvel Universe, Marvel’s Midnight Suns centers around fan-favorite superheroes such as Iron Man, Ghost Rider, and Wolverine, all of whom will apparently do battle via a new card-based combat system.

What this means is that Marvel’s Midnight Suns isn’t simply “Marvel’s XCOM,” which many had predicted due to the involvement of Firaxis Games. Instead, players will have to learn how to strategize and trade blows using a completely different gameplay system that leverages a deck of cards at the bottom of the screen.

In Marvel’s Midnight Suns, players will take on the role of a centuries-old hero called The Hunter. This is a completely customizable character who is reportedly canon to the Marvel universe. The Hunter is tasked with killing Lilith, the queen of demons who is set on summoning her evil master, Chthon.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is currently scheduled for launch in March 2022. It will be available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC via Steam and Epic Games Store.

Pushed to the brink, the Avengers desperately look to fight fire with Hellfire by enlisting the help of the Midnight Suns – Nico Minoru, Blade, Magik, and Ghost Rider – young heroes with powers deeply rooted in the supernatural, formed to prevent the very prophecy Lilith aims to fulfill. Together, they resurrect an ancient warrior – the Hunter, Lilith’s forsaken child and the only hero known to have ever defeated her.
