Cooler Master V650 SFX GOLD

Cooler Master Co. LTD. is a company that is well known for producing enthusiast computer cases and has been in business for almost 25 years. In addition to cases, Cooler Master has product lines for CPU and GPU heatsinks, case fans, various accessories, and power supplies. Cooler Master’s entry into the power supply market has been rather mixed with some good products, and some that could use improvement. Today, we are reviewing one of Cooler Master’s middle-of-the-road (capacity-wise) SFX units targeted specifically at gamers the V650 SFX GOLD (MPY-6501-SFHAGV) which is produced in conjunction with Gospower.

Gospower (Shenzhen Gospell Digital Technology CO.,LTD) was founded almost 30 years ago in 1993 as a group with the Gospower subsidiary being established in 2006. While not a major power supply OEM, Gospower does produce a number of products in power electronics and related technologies. This includes telecom power supplies, power adapters, industrial power supplies, custom power supplies, and Computing and Gaming power supplies. It is, obviously, this last category that has brought this Gospower built unit to us today. To date, Cooler Master is the only brand we have seen using Gospower as an OEM in the NA market.

How Cool is This Master?

The Cooler Master V650 SFX GOLD is the first power supply we have seen from Cooler Master here at TheFPSReview. This particular unit is going to be interesting to a bit of a different crowd than usual if for no other reason than its form factor. That said, we have seen a number of SFX and SFX-L power supplies over the last few years. As such, we have a good idea of what the environment for these kinds of products looks like today.

In particular, we have seen a number of enthusiast-oriented SFX products. That is good for us as Cooler Master is pitching this unit as such, but maybe not as good for Cooler Master as they are going to be facing a lot of competition in this kind of product segment so things will not be easy for the V650 SFX GOLD today. However, before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let’s first see what Cooler Master has to say about this unit:

The V SFX Gold is Cooler Master’s debut entry into SFX power supply units. After much demand, we have finally produced a PSU specifically made to meet the needs of mini-ITX system builders. This unit delivers top-shelf performance in 550, 650, 750, and 850 watt levels. It offers an 80 PLUS Gold efficiency rating, full-modular cabling, a 92mm FDB fan, 16AWG PCIe high efficiency cables, 100% Japanese capacitors, and a 10 year warranty. And with the included SFX-to-ATX bracket, this unit is compatible with cases ranging from mini-ITX all the way up to E-ATX systems.

Let’s move on now and see what we can expect when a user purchases the Cooler Master V650 SFX GOLD power supply in retail in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
