Sega has shared the first gameplay footage for Sonic Frontiers, a new Sonic game that will attempt to reinvent the iconic franchise by letting the blue bomber run wild in a completely open world (or, as Sega prefers to describe it, “open zone”). The short but promising footage shows off Sonic speeding around a lush world, combating foes with his signature dash attacks, battling bosses, grinding on rails, and much more. Sonic Frontiers is being developed by veteran members of Sega’s Sonic Team Japan and will be released in late 2022 for the PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch platforms. IGN will have more to share regarding Sonic Frontiers tomorrow as part of a month-long feature.

“Sonic Frontiers is a huge leap forward for the franchise, delivering an evolved gameplay experience that long-time Sonic fans and action-adventure fans alike can enjoy,” said Takashi Iizuka, creative officer at Sonic Team USA . “The talented developers at Sonic Team Japan have created a whole new kind of gameplay experience for Sonic the Hedgehog, where players can use Sonic’s signature speed and skills to explore lush and expansive landscapes. Sonic Frontiers offers surprises and twists around every corner, and we can’t wait to reveal more about the game in the coming months.”

Different worlds come together in this latest adventure from Sonic the Hedgehog. Enjoy an unprecedented experience, with all the freedom to race through open-zone areas at top speed. Fight powerful enemies with Sonic and make your way across the Starfall Islands – landscapes filled with dense forests, sparkling waterfalls, sizzling deserts and more! The release is slated for late 2022.
